The Last Polka

Took me a year to try ice cream from The Last Polka — and that’s with Mr. T’s persuasion.

We had ours at Marmalade, BV2. Salted Gula Melaka & Nutella are RM 6.80 & RM 8.80 respectively.

Ordinary chocolate ice cream

Mr. T was impressed with the flavour but I didn’t share the same thought.

You can get The Last Polka from:

The Bee, Jaya One
Marmalade, Bangsar Village 2
Whisk, Empire Shopping Gallery
The Tea Republic
Simply Mel’s

Or you can order from their website.

Gokuraku Ramen, Mid Valley

A new non-halal ramen restaurant surfaced in Mid Valley – it’s located a floor above the KTM entrance.

I remember there was a queue during the opening week (they had a 50% off promo for all ramen) but the crowd has died down after that.

Ultimate Tonkatsu Ramen Lunch Set, RM 20.90

Despite reading not so great reviews about the ramen & pork broth, I actually enjoyed my bowl of ramen. The pork broth had reasonably good flavour, and I loved the semi-runny eggs. What I didn’t like were the side dishes that came alone with the lunch sets.

Kobuta Meshi

Stir-fried pork belly in soy sauce. That’s how it tasted like. My colleague didn’t think there was anything special about it.

I had the Char Siew Pau. Big mistake.

Doesn’t the meat look familiar? Same meat from the rice bowl, except it’s wrapped up in a hard, cold bread that didn’t have the same texture as paus.

Food and service at Gokuraku Ramen were alright but I don’t think there’ll be a second visit. Additionally, I’m not a fan of ramen – I’m more of an udon person.

Ricetaurant, Bangsar Village II

Another one of the BIG Group’s idea: Ricetaurant, a pork-free Chinese restaurant, located next to Canoodling in BV2. You can choose to order from Canoodling’s menu if you prefer.

5 Root Vegetables, RM 18.90; Ginger & Spring Onion Beef, RM 18.90

Hearty dishes that weren’t enough for the three of us. I found the 5 root vegetables a bit raw but my friend said it’s meant to be cooked that way.

Curry Chicken, RM 15.90

Thick aromatic curry that reminded me of F.C.’s chicken curry. My only complaint: there were only 2 drumsticks.

Bowl of white rice: RM 2.50
Drinking water: free

Ricetaurant has a limited menu that does not have anything eye-catching. Prices are on the high side for portions that are enough for two. We weren’t impressed with the quality and quantity of food here, hence, I doubt my friends & I will return to the restaurant.

Hummingbirds Coffee Bar, Bangsar

Hummingbirds is located in Belinda Looi’s Boutique along Jalan Telawi 3. Part of the shop has transformed into a cafe that serves sweet indulgences.

It’s packed on a Sunday noon so we’re placed right behind in the shop. The picture above was taken at nearly closing time.

Red Velvet Cake, RM 10.50

The presentation was lovely but I don’t fancy red velvet cakes. My friend finished most of it and she said it was buttery.

Vanilla lemon (in dark brown) & Earl Grey macarons (RM 5 each) & Hershey’s Cupcake (RM 6.50)

The best macaron I’ve tasted so far – which wasn’t any typical well-known flavour – was Earl Grey. It was the most exciting moment for my friend & I because we found our favourite tea in a bite-sized dessert! Meanwhile, the Hershey’s cupcake was very moist & chocolatey — too rich (in flavour) that I didn’t finish it.

Toffee Coffee (decaf), RM 13.50

Raspberry Cloud, RM 15.50

The milkshake that called for glasses of water. Thick, lovely shake and awesomely sweet.

The sweets here are highly priced but the macarons are worth a try.

Hummingbirds closes at 7 PM on Sundays.

Goreng Kuey Teow Tong Shin, Bandar Puteri Puchong

Have you tasted char koay teow that contains large amount of pork lard?

I have! The oily fried plate of koay teow with strong wok hei taste gave warning signs to my heart but ohmy, it’s so good! The Fried Kuey Teow Special (RM 9.80 for a small plate) came in a big portion with a fair amount of fresh prawns and slices of Chinese sausages. I omitted cockles because I do not like them :P

Have I found the best CKT? Maybe!

I wouldn’t say the same for the bland-tasting popiah (RM 3.80 for 2 rolls). The wet popiah wasn’t wrapped tightly – we found the contents spilling all over the table while we tried to grab a piece with chopsticks.

There are varieties of char koay teow on their menu priced from RM 5.80 – 10.80 for a plate. Besides than CKT, they also have prawn mee, lam mee, fried rice, fishball and meatball noodles.

Goreng Kuey Teow Tong Shin is non-halal.
